Depends on who you ask, right? My friend, we’ll call her ‘Jane’, came to see me and said she’d had a huge argument with her sister about the safety of Delta 8 products. I immediately cringed. Jane’s sister isn’t someone you want to argue with; she’s never wrong, even when she’s wrong. But I couldn’t wait to hear this so I settled in and waited for her to finish the story.
As it turns out, one of the major news channels reported that the FDA sent out a notice saying Delta 8 had some serious health risks. “In 2021 the FDA issued a consumer update, warning that Delta 8 THC has serious health risks. Reports from December 2020 through July 2021, involving 22 people, some of who reported vomitting, trouble standing, hallucinations, and passing out while using Delta 8 product,” WebMD said.
As recently as twelve days ago, the FDA for the first time issued warning letters to five manufacturers for selling Delta 8 THC products in ways that the agency asserts are in violation of the FD&C Act. This new release comes after the FDA received over 100 reports of adverse effect in consumers who Delta 8 products between December 1, 2020 and February 28, 2022. Also, the FDA stated that the National Poison Control Centers received 2300 exposure cases of Delta 8 products between January 1, 2021 through February 28, 2022. The FDA then released a consumer update, to educate the public on the “health risks” related to Delta 8 THC products; there was also concerns as to how it was labeled and packaged that may be appealing to children.
The FDA has sent letters previously to companies illegally selling unapproved or mis-branded CBD products that claimed to treat illnesses but has remained relatively hands-off when it comes to regulating these products. Most poison control center calls were about symptoms that are similar to the effects of consuming too much cannabis (marijuana). Pure Delta 8 THC cannot cause death from overdose. Because the hemp market isn’t regulated, these products could be contaminated with elements from the manufacturing process.
